Jindo Sea Crossing
Original Watercolor
$250.00
The artwork vividly captures the Jindo Sea Crossing, or Moses' Miracle, which happens every year, just off the coast of Jindo Island, South Korea. The ocean draws back to reveal a golden path that stretches over 2 kilometers across open water to the island of Modo. This tidal phenomenon occurs during the Spring Equinox; usually lasting about an hour. Many thousands travel from all over the South Korea, and the world to enjoy the festivities celebrating this tidal event.
Two young girls adorned in authentic, traditional attire, fluttering the wind encapsulate the heart of this festival. Lanterns are hung all around the promenade with the image of an old lady on her knees in prayer, with a tiger. This commemorates the story of a woman named Bbyong. Long ago tigers were once abundant on Jindo Island, attacking the villagers. Bbyong was accidentally left behind as her family fled. She prayed every day to the god of the ocean until he told her a rainbow would appear in the sea for her to cross. The next day she went to the sea and saw the rainbow road revealed, allowing her to cross and be reunited with her family.
